A night on a Dal Lake houseboat is one of the most special experiences in India. Carved walnut-wood interiors, a veranda over the water, shikaras gliding past and the call to prayer echoing across the lake at dawn – it feels like stepping into another century.
- Where: Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake, Srinagar
- Access: by shikara from the ghats on the Boulevard
- Best time: April–October (winter stays are cold but heated)
- Included: a houseboat night is part of our Kashmir itineraries
What is a Kashmiri houseboat?
Houseboats were first built during the colonial period when outsiders were not allowed to own land in Kashmir. Today they are moored permanently along Dal and Nigeen lakes. Each houseboat usually has a sitting room, dining room and two to four bedrooms with attached bathrooms, all decorated with carved wood, Kashmiri carpets and papier-mâché.
What to expect
- Arrival by shikara: you are rowed from the ghat to your houseboat.
- Home-style hospitality: the owner family often lives nearby and serves Kashmiri meals and kahwa.
- Veranda views: sunrise and sunset over the lake are the highlight.
- Simple comforts: rooms are cosy rather than luxurious; heating is provided in cold months.
Shikara rides and the floating market
- Sunset shikara ride: an hour around the lake, past lotus gardens and floating vegetable plots.
- Early-morning floating market: vegetable sellers trade from boats at dawn – go with a shikara before 6 am.
- Char Chinar island and Nehru Park are popular stops.
Agree the shikara rate and route before starting; official rate boards are displayed at many ghats.
Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake?
Dal Lake is livelier and close to the Boulevard and markets. Nigeen Lake is quieter and more peaceful. Both are lovely – choose based on whether you want activity or calm.
Tips for your stay

- Keep valuables locked – it’s a home, not a hotel.
