Pushkar
Pushkar Lake
Surrounded by 52 ghats and hundreds of temples, the lake is believed to have been created where a lotus fell from Lord Brahma’s hand. Evening aarti on the ghats is peaceful and beautiful. Remove shoes on the ghats and politely decline anyone insisting on paid “puja” if you don’t want it.
Brahma Temple
One of the very few temples dedicated to Lord Brahma, with a red spire and a silver turtle in the floor of the hall.
Savitri Mata temple
On a hilltop above the town, reached by steps or a ropeway, with a wonderful sunset view.
The bazaar
Colourful lanes for bangles, textiles, leather and rose products – Pushkar is famous for its rose gardens.
Ajmer
Ajmer Sharif Dargah
The shrine of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti draws pilgrims of every faith. Cover your head, dress modestly and keep belongings minimal. Qawwali is sung in the evenings.
Ana Sagar Lake and Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra
A historic lake with marble pavilions, and one of India’s oldest mosque structures.
The Pushkar Camel Fair
Held around Kartik Purnima, the fair combines a livestock market, folk performances and religious bathing. It’s spectacular but extremely crowded – book stays months ahead.
