As the sun sets over the Ganga in Haridwar, thousands gather on the steps of Har Ki Pauri. Bells ring, priests raise huge brass lamps, and leaf boats carrying flowers and diyas float downstream. The Haridwar Ganga Aarti is one of the most moving rituals in India.

About Har Ki Pauri
Har Ki Pauri – “the steps of the Lord” – is the most sacred ghat in Haridwar. A stone is said to bear the footprint of Lord Vishnu, and bathing here is believed to wash away sins. During the Kumbh Mela it is the centre of the bathing rituals.
How to watch the Ganga Aarti
- Arrive early: the ghat fills quickly, especially on weekends and festival days.
- Choose your side: the main aarti is performed from the steps facing the Brahma Kund; the opposite bank also gives a clear view.
- Offer a diya: buy a small leaf boat with flowers and a lamp to float on the river.
- Keep belongings safe and hold children’s hands in the crowd.
- Volunteers will collect donations – give only to official counters if you wish to donate.
Taking a holy dip
Bathing ghats at Har Ki Pauri have chains and railings because the current is strong. Stay within the marked areas, don’t go deep, and avoid bathing during heavy rains when the river is high.
