Jodhpur, the “Blue City”, spreads out beneath one of the most imposing forts in India. From the ramparts of Mehrangarh you look down on a sea of indigo-washed houses, with the desert stretching to the horizon. It’s a highlight of our Royal Rajasthan circuit.

Mehrangarh Fort
Built on a 125-m-high rock in the 15th century, Mehrangarh is one of the largest forts in India. Inside are richly decorated palaces – Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal – and an excellent museum of palanquins, howdahs, arms, paintings and textiles. Take the lift or walk up through the seven gates; the audio guide is very good.
Jaswant Thada
A white marble cenotaph near the fort, with delicate carving and views of Mehrangarh across a small lake.
The blue old city
Walk the lanes below the fort to see the famous blue houses. The colour is traditionally linked with Brahmin homes and is also said to keep houses cool.
Umaid Bhawan Palace
Completed in 1943, it is one of the largest private residences in the world. Part of it is a luxury hotel, part is the royal residence, and part is a museum open to visitors. Our tour visits Umaid Bhawan on the way out of Jodhpur.
Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) and Sardar Market
The busy market around the clock tower is great for spices, textiles, bangles and street food – try mirchi vada and makhaniya lassi.
Jodhpur in our Rajasthan tour
