Every spring, the slopes below the Zabarwan hills in Srinagar turn into a carpet of red, yellow, pink, purple and white. The Kashmir Tulip Festival is held at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden – often described as Asia’s largest tulip garden – and it has quickly become one of the most searched spring trips in India. If you are planning to see it, timing is everything: tulips bloom for only a few weeks.
This guide explains when to go, how to make the most of a day at the garden, and how to combine the festival with Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg on one comfortable trip.
- Where: Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Srinagar, near Dal Lake
- When: usually late March to late April (peak bloom lasts about 3–4 weeks)
- Ideal trip length: 6–9 days covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg
- Our package: Kashmir from ₹15,500 per person (6N/7D) – book on WhatsApp
When does the Kashmir Tulip Festival happen?
The garden normally opens to visitors in the last week of March and stays open until the tulips fade in late April. Exact dates are announced by the Jammu & Kashmir Floriculture Department each year and depend on the weather – a warm March brings the bloom forward, a cold spell delays it.
As a rule of thumb:
- Late March: early varieties open; fewer crowds, cooler days.
- First half of April: the best overall bloom – most beds are in full colour.
- Late April: later varieties still look good, but some beds start to fade.
If your dates are flexible, aim for the first two weeks of April. Message us before booking and we will share the latest bloom update from Srinagar.
How to enjoy the tulip garden
The garden is laid out in terraces, so the higher rows give you the classic photo with lines of tulips and the hills behind. A few tips from our past groups:
- Go early. Gates open in the morning; the first hour is quieter and the light is softer for photos.
- Plan two to three hours. That is enough to walk all terraces without rushing.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The paths are long and slightly sloped.
- Carry a light jacket. Srinagar mornings in March and April can be chilly.
- Combine it with Dal Lake. The garden is a short drive from the boulevard, so a sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake fits the same day.
The perfect spring Kashmir itinerary
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to see the whole valley, not just the tulips. Here is how our Kashmir – Paradise on Earth tour uses the season:
- Srinagar: tulip garden, Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi), Dal Lake shikara ride and a night on a houseboat.
- Gulmarg: meadows still partly under snow in early spring and the famous gondola ride.
- Pahalgam: pine forests, the Lidder river, Betaab Valley and Aru Valley.
- Sonmarg: the “meadow of gold” and views towards the Thajiwas glacier.
Weather and what to pack in spring
Days in Srinagar are pleasant in April, but nights are cold and the higher meadows of Gulmarg and Sonmarg can still have snow. Pack layers: a warm jacket, sweaters, thermals for the evenings, sunglasses, sunscreen and a cap. A small umbrella helps because spring showers are common. How to reach Srinagar from Kolkata
Most of our guests fly from Kolkata to Srinagar with one stop (usually via Delhi). Train travellers go to Jammu Tawi or Katra and continue by road or by the newer rail link where available. When you book with us, we can help you choose the most convenient option for your dates and budget.
Why book the tulip season with a tour operator?
Spring is peak season in Kashmir. Houseboats, hotels and cabs fill up fast, especially in the first two weeks of April. Booking a planned package means your stays, transfers and sightseeing are confirmed in advance, and you have one team to call if plans change because of weather. Our Kashmir tour package from Kolkata explains exactly what is included.
Final tips
- Book 4–8 weeks ahead for April travel.
- Keep one flexible half-day in Srinagar in case rain changes the plan.
- Carry ID; you will need it at hotels and at some checkpoints.
