Few travellers realise that a short train ride from Kolkata leads to the ruins of two great medieval capitals of Bengal. Gour and Pandua near Malda (Maldah) were once among the largest cities in the subcontinent, and their mosques, gates and towers are some of the finest examples of Bengal’s brick and terracotta architecture.
- Distance from Kolkata: about 330 km; overnight or day trains to Malda Town
- Highlights: Dakhil Darwaza, Baro Sona Masjid, Firoz Minar, Qadam Rasul, Lattan Masjid, Adina Mosque
- Best time: October to March

Gour – the old capital
Gour served as the capital of Bengal under several dynasties. Highlights include:
- Dakhil Darwaza: a massive 15th-century brick gateway – the ceremonial entrance to the citadel.
- Baro Sona Masjid (Great Golden Mosque): a large stone mosque with arches and domes, once gilded.
- Firoz Minar: a five-storey victory tower with terracotta decoration.
- Qadam Rasul: a shrine said to hold a footprint of the Prophet.
- Lattan Masjid (Painted Mosque): known for its coloured glazed tiles.
- Chamkati Masjid and Lukochuri Darwaza.
Pandua and the Adina Mosque
North of Malda, Pandua was another capital. Its Adina Mosque, built in the 14th century, was once one of the largest mosques in South Asia. Today its ruined arcades of brick and stone stretch for an impressive length – a powerful, peaceful place to walk.
Other things to do
- Malda’s mangoes: the district is famous for its mangoes – in summer (May–July) try Fazli, Himsagar and Langra.
- Ramkeli: associated with Sri Chaitanya, with an annual fair.
- Silk weaving in nearby villages.
