At the edge of Kumaon, where the road climbs to the foot of the Himalaya, lies Munsiyari – a small town facing the five snow peaks of the Panchachuli range. It is often called “Little Kashmir” and is one of the most rewarding offbeat destinations in Uttarakhand.
- Altitude: about 2,200 m
- Famous view: the five peaks of Panchachuli
- Best time: March–June and October–November
- Our tour: Kumaon Himalaya 7N/8D with two nights in Munsiyari, ₹24,500 per person
Why visit Munsiyari
Munsiyari feels far from the crowds of the more famous hill stations. Its sunrise view – the first light turning the Panchachuli peaks pink and gold – is worth the long drive. It is also the gateway to treks to the Milam, Ralam and Namik glaciers.
Things to do
- Sunrise over Panchachuli from your hotel or the nearby viewpoints.
- Khaliya Top: a meadow trek (about 6–8 km) with a full Himalayan panorama.
- Birthi Falls: a tall waterfall on the way into Munsiyari.
- Nanda Devi temple: a short walk with valley views.
- Tribal Heritage Museum: a small museum on the Bhotia people and the old Tibet trade.
- Thamri Kund: a forest walk to a small lake.
Best time to visit
- March to June: rhododendrons in bloom and pleasant weather.
- July to September: monsoon – lush but with landslides on the approach roads.
- October and November: clear skies and the sharpest mountain views.
- December to February: snow and cold – beautiful but roads can be blocked.
How to reach
Munsiyari is a long drive – roughly 8–10 hours from Kathgodam – through Almora and Binsar or via Chaukori. That’s why our Kumaon Himalaya tour reaches Munsiyari from Binsar on Day 3 and spends two nights there before continuing to Kausani and Nainital. See our Nainital guide for the rest of the route.
Tips
- Roads are winding; carry motion-sickness medicine.
- Mobile networks work in town but drop on the way.
