Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) is where the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati are believed to meet – the Triveni Sangam. Taking a holy dip at the confluence is considered deeply auspicious, and the city is the host of the Kumbh and Maha Kumbh Melas.
- Must-do: boat ride to the Sangam and a holy dip
- Other sights: Bade Hanuman Ji Mandir, Akbar Fort (from outside), Anand Bhavan, Chandrashekhar Azad Park
- Time needed: one full day
- Our tour: Spiritual Heartland 7N/8D, ₹17,500 per person
Visiting the Triveni Sangam
Boats leave from the ghats near the fort and take you out to the confluence, where wooden platforms are set up for bathing. You can clearly see the meeting of the muddy Ganga and the greener Yamuna.
Tips for the Sangam:
- Agree the boat fare before you board; prices depend on boat size and time.
- Carry a change of clothes and a small towel.
- Keep valuables on shore or with a family member in the boat.
- Follow the boatman’s instructions about where to bathe.
- Morning visits are calmer and cooler.
Other places to visit
- Bade Hanuman Ji Mandir: a unique temple with a reclining Hanuman idol near the Sangam.
- Akbar’s Fort: built in 1583; most areas are with the army, so it is usually seen from outside.
- Anand Bhavan: the Nehru family home, now a museum of India’s freedom struggle.
- Chandrashekhar Azad Park: where the revolutionary made his last stand.
- Allahabad High Court and University buildings: colonial architecture worth a drive past.
