In the misty mountains of north-west Vietnam, Sapa is a world of emerald rice terraces carved into steep valleys, villages of the Hmong and Dao communities and the cable car to Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina. It’s the part of Vietnam our travellers talk about most after they return.
- Location: Lao Cai province, north-west Vietnam
- Altitude: about 1,500 m (cool all year)
- Highlights: rice terraces, Cat Cat village, Lao Chai and Ta Van, Fansipan cable car
- Our tour: Vibrant Vietnam with Sapa, 9 days, from ₹1,30,000 per person
Rice terraces and village walks
Sapa’s terraces are farmed by hand and change colour with the seasons – water-filled mirrors in spring, bright green in summer and gold just before the September harvest. Easy village walks include:
- Cat Cat village: a short walk from town, with a waterfall and traditional houses.
- Lao Chai and Ta Van: a classic half-day trek down the Muong Hoa valley through terraces and Hmong and Giay villages.
- Y Linh Ho: a longer trail with sweeping views.
Walks can be muddy – trekking shoes help.
Fansipan cable car
The cable car from Sapa climbs to near the summit of Fansipan (about 3,143 m), the “Roof of Indochina”. The ride crosses the valley in about 20 minutes, followed by steps or a funicular to the top, with pagodas and statues along the way. On clear days the view is spectacular; on cloudy days you walk above a sea of clouds.
Markets and culture
- Sapa town market for local produce and textiles.
- Bac Ha Sunday market (a longer trip) for colourful ethnic markets.
- Handwoven indigo fabrics and embroidered bags make great souvenirs.
Best time to visit Sapa
- March to May: pleasant, flowers and water-filled terraces.
- September to November: golden terraces at harvest (September) and clear skies.
- June to August: green but rainy.
- December to February: cold and misty; occasional frost.
