Between the tea hills of Munnar and the backwaters of Alleppey lies Thekkady, Kerala’s spice and forest country. The air smells of cardamom and pepper, and the Periyar Tiger Reserve protects one of South India’s most beautiful forest lakes.
- Distance from Munnar: about 90–100 km (3–3.5 hours)
- Highlights: Periyar lake boating, spice plantations, nature walks, cultural shows
- Best time: September to March
- Our Kerala package: 2 nights in Thekkady
Periyar Tiger Reserve
The reserve surrounds an artificial lake created by the Mullaperiyar dam. The classic way to experience it is the Periyar lake boat ride, where you may see elephants, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer and many birds along the shore. Tigers are present but rarely seen.
Other activities run by the forest department include guided nature walks, bamboo rafting and border hiking. These have limited daily slots, so book early.
Spice plantation tours
Walk through gardens of cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, vanilla and coffee with a guide who explains how each spice grows. Buy fresh spices directly from the farms – far better than city markets.
Cultural shows
Evening performances of Kathakali (classical dance-drama with elaborate makeup) and Kalaripayattu (Kerala’s ancient martial art) are held in Kumily town. Arrive early for Kathakali to watch the artists apply their makeup.
Other things to do
- Elephant camps offering feeding and bathing experiences (choose ethical options).
