Spiti Valley is open to travellers all year in theory, but the experience changes completely with the seasons. In some months both entry roads are open and the valley is green with barley fields; in others snow closes the passes and temperatures fall to −20°C. Choosing the best time to visit Spiti Valley decides which route you can take, what you can see and how comfortable your trip will be.

Quick facts
  • Best overall: mid-June to September
  • Our recommended window for the full circuit: August and September
  • Kunzum Pass (Manali side): usually open from June to October, weather permitting
  • Kinnaur route (Shimla side): open most of the year, with winter disruptions

Spiti in two routes – why the season matters

There are two roads into Spiti:

A full circuit – in through Kinnaur and out through Manali, like our Spiti Valley tour package – is only possible when Kunzum Pass is open.

Month-by-month guide

January to March – deep winter

Heavy snow, temperatures far below freezing, and the Manali side closed. Only very experienced winter travellers should attempt Spiti in these months, usually via Kinnaur with special arrangements. Not recommended for families.

April and May – spring thaw

Snow starts melting and roads are cleared, but Kunzum Pass and Chandratal are usually still closed. Kinnaur is lovely with apple blossom, so May is a good month for a Kinnaur – Kalpa trip instead.

June – the season opens

The Manali side typically opens in June. Days are sunny, but some high camps and Chandratal may still be snowbound early in the month. Expect more traffic at the Atal Tunnel.

July – green fields, occasional rain

Spiti lies in the rain shadow, so it gets little monsoon rain itself, but the approach roads through Kinnaur and Manali can be hit by landslides. Barley and pea fields turn the valley green.

August and September – the sweet spot

This is our favourite time: both routes are normally open, skies are clear, Chandratal is at its most beautiful and harvest season colours the villages. It is also when we run our Spiti departures.

October – golden but cold

Poplars turn gold and the light is beautiful for photography. Nights are freezing and Kunzum Pass can close with an early snowfall, so plans must stay flexible.

November and December – winter returns

Snow returns and most homestays begin to close. Only the Kinnaur side remains accessible.
