Jaipur, the “Pink City”, is the gateway to Rajasthan – a planned city of terracotta-pink facades, grand forts on the ridges and bazaars full of block prints and gems. Two days are enough to see the main sights at a comfortable pace. Here is our Jaipur sightseeing plan.
- Time needed: 2 full days
- Must-see: Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh, Jal Mahal, Albert Hall
- Best time: October to March
- Our tours: Jaipur – Bundi – Dausa – Ranthambore (6N/7D) and Royal Rajasthan (10N/11D)
Day 1 – the old city
- Hawa Mahal: the iconic “Palace of Winds” with 953 small windows. Best photographed from the cafés opposite in the morning.
- City Palace: still partly the residence of the royal family, with museums, courtyards and the famous Peacock Gate.
- Jantar Mantar: a UNESCO-listed astronomical observatory with giant stone instruments, including one of the world’s largest sundials.
- Govind Dev Ji temple: an important Krishna temple inside the City Palace complex – attend an aarti if you can.
- Bazaars: Johari Bazaar for jewellery, Bapu Bazaar for textiles and mojris.
Day 2 – forts and palaces
- Amber Fort: a stunning hilltop fort-palace with the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace). Go early to avoid crowds and heat.
- Jaigarh Fort: above Amber, home to the giant Jaivana cannon.
- Jal Mahal: the “water palace” in Man Sagar Lake – a photo stop.
- Nahargarh Fort: the best sunset view over Jaipur.
- Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan: marble cenotaphs of the royal family.
- Albert Hall Museum: beautiful at night when lit up.
- Birla Mandir: a white marble temple.
