Above Kaza, a winding road climbs to three tiny villages that sit among the highest motorable settlements in the world: Langza, Hikkim and Komic. A giant Buddha watching over the valley, fossils of sea creatures in the rocks and a post office at about 4,400 m make this one of the most memorable days in Spiti.

Quick facts
  • Altitudes: Langza about 4,400 m, Hikkim about 4,400 m, Komic about 4,500 m
  • Distance: a 40–50 km loop from Kaza
  • Time needed: half a day
  • Our Spiti package: covered on Day 7 with Key Monastery and Kibber

Langza – Buddha and fossils

Langza is famous for its large, colourful Buddha statue overlooking the valley, with Chau Chau Kang Nilda peak behind. The surrounding slopes contain marine fossils – reminders that the Himalaya rose from the ancient Tethys sea. Please don’t buy or collect fossils; it harms the site.

Hikkim – the high post office

The Hikkim post office is widely described as one of the highest post offices in the world. Travellers send postcards home from here – a lovely souvenir that arrives weeks later. Opening hours are limited and it may be closed on Sundays and holidays.

Komic – among the highest villages

Komic is often described as one of the highest villages connected by road in Asia. Its Tangyud (Komic) monastery is a quiet, ancient gompa with views of a vast, empty landscape.
