Chandratal – the “moon lake” – is a crescent of impossibly blue water at about 4,300 m, cradled by the mountains of the Lahaul–Spiti border. Its colour shifts from turquoise to deep blue through the day, and the silence around it is unforgettable.

Quick facts
  • Altitude: about 4,300 m
  • Access: via Batal, between Kunzum Pass and the Manali side
  • Open: usually late June to early October
  • Our Spiti package: Day 8 visits Chandratal on the way from Kaza to Manali

How to reach Chandratal

Chandratal is reached from Batal, a tiny stop on the road between Kunzum Pass and Gramphu. From Batal a rough track of about 14 km leads to a parking area, followed by a walk of roughly 1–1.5 km over gentle terrain to the lakeshore.

From Kaza, the drive crosses Kunzum Pass (about 4,550 m) – where travellers stop at the temple of Kunzum Devi – before descending to Batal and turning off to the lake.

When can you visit?

Timing within the day matters too: the Batal–Gramphu road has water crossings that rise in the afternoon with snowmelt, so an early start is wise.

Camping at Chandratal

Camping directly on the lakeshore is not allowed to protect the fragile ecosystem. Camps are located a few kilometres away near the parking area. Nights are extremely cold even in August – carry heavy warm clothes if you plan to stay.
