Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the spiritual heart of Varanasi. Since the opening of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor, the temple is connected directly to the Ganga ghats by a wide, clean pathway – making darshan far easier for families and senior citizens.
- Deity: Lord Shiva as Vishwanath, “Lord of the Universe”
- Corridor: links the temple to Lalita Ghat and Manikarnika area on the Ganga
- Best time for darshan: early morning on weekdays
- Our tour: Spiritual Heartland 7N/8D with two nights in Varanasi, ₹17,500 per person
About the temple
The present temple was built by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar in 1780, and its spire was later covered in gold donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Devotees believe that a visit to Kashi Vishwanath and a dip in the Ganga bring liberation.
The Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor
The corridor opened a direct route from the river to the temple, with plazas, rest areas, a museum, food courts and facilities for pilgrims. You can now walk up from the ghat after a holy dip straight to the temple complex.
