Varanasi – also called Kashi and Banaras – is one of the oldest living cities in the world. For millions of Hindus it is the holiest of places, and for every traveller it is unforgettable: bells at dawn, boats on the Ganga, narrow lanes and the evening Ganga Aarti lighting up the ghats.
- Must-see: Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath, Sarnath
- Time needed: 2 full days
- Best season: October to March
- Our tour: 7N/8D Lucknow – Ayodhya – Varanasi – Chitrakoot – Prayagraj, ₹17,500 per person
The evening Ganga Aarti
Every evening after sunset, priests perform a synchronised aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat with large brass lamps, conch shells and chanting. A smaller, quieter aarti also takes place at Assi Ghat.
How to watch it well:
- Arrive early – at least 45 minutes before the start – to get a good spot on the steps.
- Watch from a boat for a front view facing the priests; boats line up on the river.
- Keep valuables safe – it is very crowded, especially on festivals.
Sunrise boat ride
The best way to see the ghats is from the water at sunrise. You will pass Manikarnika (the main cremation ghat – please don’t photograph funerals), Harishchandra, Kedar and Assi ghats while the city wakes up.
Kashi Vishwanath and other temples
- Kashi Vishwanath: one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor now connects the temple to the river. Read our Kashi Vishwanath darshan guide.
- Kal Bhairav: the “guardian of Kashi”.
- Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple and Durga Mandir.
Sarnath and BHU
Sarnath, about 10 km away, is where the Buddha gave his first sermon. Visit the Dhamek Stupa, the Sarnath Museum and the Buddhist temples. Banaras Hindu University, with its Vishwanath temple on campus, can be combined on the same afternoon.
How many days in Varanasi?
Two full days is ideal: one for temples, a boat ride and the aarti, and one for Sarnath, BHU and shopping for Banarasi silk.
Food to try
Kachori-sabzi breakfast, malaiyyo (in winter), lassi in clay cups and Banarasi paan.
