Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is changing fast – new museums, restored heritage districts and a skyline of striking towers sit alongside traditional souqs and mud-brick forts. Beyond the city, the dramatic cliffs of the Edge of the World are one of the most spectacular landscapes in Arabia.

Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn)

About 90 km north-west of Riyadh, the Tuwaiq escarpment drops hundreds of metres into a vast plain. Standing at the edge at sunset is breathtaking. The last stretch is an off-road track, so visits are usually by 4×4 with a guide. There are no railings – stay well back from the edge.

Diriyah

The birthplace of the first Saudi state, the mud-brick district of At-Turaif is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Restored palaces, museums and the Bujairi Terrace restaurants make it a lovely evening visit.

Masmak Fortress

A clay-and-mud-brick fort in the old city, central to the story of the capture of Riyadh in 1902 that led to the founding of modern Saudi Arabia.

National Museum

A modern museum telling the story of the Arabian Peninsula from prehistory to the founding of the kingdom – a great introduction before visiting AlUla.

Kingdom Centre Sky Bridge

The bridge at the top of this distinctive tower gives a 360° view of Riyadh, best at dusk.

Souqs and food

Explore Souq Al Zal for traditional goods and the modern malls of Olaya. Try Arabic coffee with dates, kabsa (spiced rice), mandi and fresh juices.
